Keyboard shortcuts

TrakState has exactly one global keyboard shortcut. Everything else acts where the focus currently is — in the command palette, in the tag tree, in a dialog. That is deliberate: a shortcut that applies everywhere can be in the way everywhere.

Key Effect
Ctrl + K (macOS: Cmd + K) Opens the command palette. Pressing it again closes it.
F1 Opens the help panel on wherever you are. Pressing it again closes it. Inside a text field it does nothing, so no keystroke is lost.

The palette is the way to everything that has a name: pages, settings and quick actions. You type instead of hunting.

The palette is not offered on devices with a coarse pointer (tablet, panel PC), in presentation mode, or on the capture surface. There is neither the button in the top bar nor the shortcut there — deliberately, because on a screen with no keyboard both would only be a dead end.

Key Effect
Type letters Filters the list as you type
↓ / ↑ To the next or previous row
Enter Runs the highlighted row and closes the palette
Esc Closes the palette without running anything

Entries appear in three rubrics, always in the same order: Quick Actions, Pages & Views, Settings & System. Within a rubric, the application’s own commands come before those of plugins.

Both trees follow the usual rules for tree views:

Key Effect
↓ / ↑ To the next or previous visible row
→ Expands the node; if it is already open, moves to the first child
← Collapses the node; if it is already closed, moves to the parent
Home / End To the first or last visible row
Enter Selects the node and opens it on the right
* Expands all expandable siblings at the same level

The asterisk is the handle few people know and nobody gives up again: one press, and a whole level lies open.

Above the tree there is a search box. Whatever matches the search is expanded automatically — in addition to what you had opened yourself, not instead of it.

Key Effect
Esc Cancels and closes without saving
Enter Commits the value in a field being edited in the row
Tab / Shift + Tab Forward or back through the controls

This applies, for example, when renaming a field, adding a field, and creating a record type.

So you do not go looking: there are no shortcuts for saving, for moving between pages, or for switching the appearance. Appearance, language, presentation mode and sign-out are reached through the command palette.

Leaving presentation mode has no button, on purpose: a screen in the hall is not left by whoever happens to walk past it. Press Esc three times in quick succession, or, on a touch screen, hold a finger still in the top right corner for three seconds.
